Day 6 - Travel from Sukhothai to Chiang Rai

We drove past Chiang Mai, to which we would return in a few days. Along the way from Sukhothai to Chiang Rai, which is up in the Golden Triangle area, near both Burma and Laos, we pulled over at Den Chai to see a recently bult temple with a huge reclinging Buddha out front. Then, just before reaching Chiang Rai, we stopped to see the Wat Rong Khun, the White Temple.

This is a close-up view of the "foot" of the long snakelike thing that comes down on each side of the stairway to the temple above (see full view with reclining Buddha and stairs between the lions). For a larger view of the above, CLICK HERE

Above are two images of the next stop at the Wat Rong Kuhn temple (known as the "White Temple" just a few miles south of Chiang Rai. Two different photo effects used on this photo. Some people describe the place as a Wedding Cake, I saw it more as a nightmare in white. The white is supposed to reflect the purity of the Buddha. There are a million or so tiny little mirror mosaic tiles which create the dark lines on all the buildings in this compound. The intricacy of the decor is amazing, and looks like something done by an artist on acid. Many more photos to come. See enlargements of the above images - CLICK HERE
