Thailand Day 2

On the way to the temple, we stopped at the Flower Mart. This is a series of tented shops alongside one of the streets. Bangkok, and other cities in Thailand, have these outdoor shops along all major streets. They sell clothes, accessories, and food products in these booths. Normally they do not set up and open until around 5 PM each day. The Flower Mart opens early. Here, flowers are brought in from all corners of Thailand, and sold in elaborate arrangements. You can see the vendors as they create their flower arrangements. There are also a few fruits and vegetables sold at the Flower Mart. A young girl is preparing flowers for an arrangement

We arrive at WatPo, the oldest temple in Bangkok

See Close up portion of above image- Click Here

WatPo was originally built in 1767, and rebuilt/added to over the next 150 years. The Wat is sort of a fortress containing multiple edifices and statuary. The most important Wat (Thai for Temple) within holds the huge RECLINING BUDDHA. Unfortunately, I was unable to get a photo of this, so I attach a couple lifted from the internet. (SEE BELOW)

This Buddha is 143 ft long and 50 ft tall - photo taken from Wikipedia. The 10 ft high and 15 ft long foot of Buddha is inlaid with mother-of-pearl. It is divided into 108 signs of the true lord Buddha, with symbols by which Buddha can be identified like flowers, dancers, white elephants, and tigers. Photo taken from Wikipedia.

These shaped edifices are known as STUPAS (or CHEDIS) and are burial sites for the ashes of kings past. Again, incredibly intricate mosaic work. These large STUPAS have been dedicated to the first four kings of Thailand.

More scenes from Wat Po. For a close-up of the Fu Manchu guard, CLICK HERE. Each of the golden statues of Buddha is hand made and each slightly different. There is ongoing work to re-plate the gold exterior, and we were able to watch some of the laborers working on several statues being re-plated. Multiple Stupas at Wat Po, and the incredibly ornate buildings. For a close-up of the right side of this image, CLICK HERE. For a close-up of the upper middle of this image, click here.

Notice the mural behind the second Buddha shrine...with highlights painted in real gold. The NORASINGH is the protector and is normally found outside of entrances. For a closer view, Click here.

This is the Presidential Palace, occupied by the current President of Thailand. Taken from the bus as we drove past. We were not permitted to stop.

That evening we had a buffet dinner at the Siam Niramit theater, and watched an incredible show (complete with elephant and rivers on-stage) about the history of Thailand. The show was beautiful and awesome. Afterwards, some of the dancers came outside and did some dances out in the courtyard.
